Yachting Special Regulation AUDITS
Why Yacht Owners Complete an Annual Special Regulations Audit

Each year, yacht owners participating in racing events are required to complete a Special Regulations Audit to ensure their vessel complies with the Australian Sailing (AS) Special Regulations—a set of safety standards developed in accordance with World Sailing’s Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS).

The primary purpose of the audit is safety: to verify that all yachts meet the minimum safety requirements relevant to the category of racing they intend to enter (e.g., Category 1 for offshore races, Category 7 for inshore/twilight events). These regulations cover essential safety equipment, vessel construction, communication tools, and crew competency.

Under Racing Rules of Sailing Rule 3 (Acceptance of the Rules), competitors agree to be bound by the Racing Rules, including the applicable AS Special Regulations and RPAYC Regulations. Non-compliance may lead to disqualification or rejection from an event. Refer to RPAYC Yachting Handbook NoR.

Competitors should also note that other clubs may have additional requirements.

Accredited Australian Sailing auditors carry out annual audits—ensure that each yacht maintains up-to-date, operational safety gear and that all items meet the requirements. This proactive process reduces risk to life and property, supports owners and crews on safety aboard and incident management and promotes a culture of safety within the sailing community.

In short, the annual Special Regulations Audit is a crucial step for participation in racing under the Australian Sailing framework, safeguarding crews, yachts, and the broader sport.
