CENTREBOARD TRAINING

Welcome to the Alfreds

Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club

Junior Centreboard Training

The RPAYC Junior Centreboard Training program is for participants who have completed the Tackers program, or equivalent club learn-to-sail programs, and are ready to advance their skills and knowledge with the support of club coaches. The Junior Centreboard Training program has two stages, beginning with the Junior Training Fleet and then Junior Centreboard Racing

To participate you will require your own boat, or you can apply to lease a club training boat for a short basis through our Halvorsen Lease Scheme. Contact our Sailing Office for more information about the ‘Halvo’ lease program.

For further information about the Junior Centreboard Training programs, please contact the Sailing Office team:

Junior Centreboard Training Fleet

The Junior Training Fleet is an introductory ‘coaching’ program, where participants learn ‘how to train’ following successful completion of the Tackers program.

This level of sailing is focused on developing the fundamental sailing skills, including foundation racing activities in a fun and safe environment. The program will improve a participant’s boat handling techniques, build their confidence and independence on the water, and introduce basic racing knowledge needed to take part in club sailing activities and regattas. By the end of the program, participants will be competent in launching and retrieving their dinghy.

Junior Training Fleet training is conducted on Sunday mornings, from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM, with the support of RPAYC coaches. Sailors should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start of a coaching session to rig their boat. The session will begin with a briefing with our club coaches, followed by on water drills and activities.

To join the Junior Centreboard program participants must be an RPAYC member and have their own Optimist or Manly Junior training boat (or lease one through the Halvorsen Lease Scheme).

It is recommended and desirable that participants have progressed through all levels of Tackers, or equivalent, to have a suitable level of competency to progress through the Junior Training Fleet.

Prior to joining the Junior Training Fleet, participants must be able to demonstrate an adequate level of skill and boat control in an Optimist or Manly Junior dinghy. This is to ensure that all participants will remain safe, learn new skills and have fun at all times on the water!

All registrations are reviewed by the Senior Head Instructor to ensure that participants are placed in the correct group suited to their ability and experience.

Transition to Junior Racing Fleet
As a guide, participants should spend their first Junior Centreboard season in the Junior Training fleet, before moving into the afternoon Racing Fleet program. Experience in the Training fleet is necessary to build confidence for sailing around a large race course with stronger winds, which are typical on a Summer afternoon.

Junior Centreboard Racing Fleet

The Junior Centreboard Racing Fleet is a race coaching program, with support from RPAYC coaches in Centreboard racing sessions and training sessions. Sailors will advance to this level following successful completion of, or whilst participating in, the Junior Training Fleet.

This level of sailing will be focused on refining fundamental boat handling skills, building technical sailing knowledge, and developing a stronger understanding of racing rules and tactics. Gaining further experience in club racing with coaching support will encourage participants to pursue other classes sailed at RPAYC, and future participation in Centreboard racing.

Support of sailors will be aligned with club Centreboard racing, with the assistance of an RPAYC coach.

To participate, sailors will need to enter in the Centreboard Spring/Summer series and register for Sunday Race Coaching (links below).

To join the Junior Centreboard Racing program participants must be an RPAYC member and have their own Optimist or Manly Junior training boat (or lease one through the Halvorsen Lease Scheme). There is scope to include other centreboard classes, at the discretion of the Senior Head Instructor.

Prior to moving into the Junior Centreboard Racing Fleet, participants are required to demonstrate a strong level of skill and boat control in an Optimist or Manly Junior dinghy. Sailors also need to have a good understanding of sailing rules and safety knowledge. This is to ensure that all participants will remain safe, learn new skills and have fun at all times on the water!

As a guide, participants should spend their first Junior Centreboard season in the Junior Training fleet, before moving into the afternoon Centreboard Racing Fleet program.
