WASZP Australian National Slalom Championship

In December, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club hosted the WASZP Australian National Slalom championships and the WA State championships on the beautiful swan river, with Waszps travelling from QLD, Vic, NSW along with the local WA fleet to create a fleet of 22 with representatives from all age categories and divisions.

The National slalom had a great series of 9 races, mostly in full blown Fremantle Doctor presenting 25+ kts across the course, presenting an awesome spectacle with plenty of thrills and spills for the on looking club members to enjoy!

National slalom champion was Louis Tilly, with Nicholas Dunne in 2nd and Will Troop in 3rd. An honorable mention goes to Jamie Bougher who was the first small rig over the line, and regular  Moth sailor David Tucker who was the best placed Master, loving it so much he bought a Waszp the following week!

In the subsequent WA state championships, the breeze dropped to a more comfortable 15kts, with 8 races being completed on Melville Water over two days.

Louis Tilly was first overall with Will Troop in 2nd and Nicholas Dunne  in 3rd.  Issac Biczo was crowned WA State Champion as the best placed WA sailor in 5th.  Bridget Conrad won the best female in both the national slalom, 9th overall and 4th in the WA state championships.

Everybody appreciated the interstate competitors traveling to WA for the events, and were grateful of the vast array of volunteers as well as the dedicated RFBYC team for organising an enjoyable week in Perth.
