Sailing League Asia Pacific Finals - Skippers Report

Report written by Hugo Butterworth – Skipper – Team Goldfish Racing

The SCL AP Finals this year were held at the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia from the 9th-11th of March and we used their fleet of Elliot 7s. The CYCSA was very friendly and generous towards visiting clubs and overall ran a very seamless event.

Our goal going into the Regatta was to qualify for the SCL Open world and Youth worlds meaning we would have to be 2nd overall at a minimum. We managed to squeeze into the top 4 after a couple days of qualifying races in very light conditions and extreme heat so it was tough work for the crew but we made the finals series and it was a very close last race but we managed to win the start and we leading the fleet the whole way around until we had a small issue at the top mark which made us loose a position and with that we crossed the line in second and couldn’t be happier. We had qualified and came 1st Youth and 2nd Open.

We prepared for this event within YD training sessions Coached by Rob Brewer and also gained valuable regatta experience from competing in the French Grade 2 match racing event (LDVH) the week prior and we put what we learned all together and came away with a strong result.

The goals moving forward for our team (Goldfish Racing) is hopefully complete at world later this yeah for the SCL as well as compete at more match racing events along side YD 2024 which will continue to give us the training and support we need to succeed and make it to greater events!
