RPA’s Louis Tilly takes out first WASZP Asia Pacific Championship

The inaugural WASZP Asia Pacific championships were held at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron from 6th to 10th January 2026. The WASZP is a single-handed foiling dinghy sailed / raced all over the world and recognised by World Sialing.
Across the five days of competition, four days were put aside to Windward / Leeward racing (4 races per day) with the middle day being allocated to a Sprint series followed by a Long Distance race.

Queensland really turned on the weather with good breeze and sunny skies on all racing days. The water in Waterloo Bay proved to be a challenge both with significant windshifts, challenging wave conditions when the breeze was up and much sealife to be avoided whilst doing 20kts downwind!
Within the 21 entrants there were five competitors from New Zealand and two from North America. With Australia that was good representation from New South Wales, W.A. and Queensland

RPAYC was represented by Louis Tilly (1st overall and 1st Youth (U21)), Will Troop (4th overall and 4th Youth), Jervis Tilly and Gary Essex (1st and 2nd Super Master respectively).
There was an extremely strong female fleet who all used the WASZP Class’s new 7.5m sail to excellent effect. The female fleet podium was made up of the top email sailors from the USA (Pear Latanzi), Australia (Bridget Conrad) and Canada (Grace Poole).
