With an uncertain weather forecast, our youth squad hit the water at Newcastle today, joined by youth teams from RPAYC, RSYS, and CYCA.
The squads from each club came together at Newcastle for the first round of the annual Interclub Challenge. Over the coming four weeks, we will compete at each club using the racing fleet provided at each venue.
The conditions proved challenging. There was light and gusty conditions with WNW breeze ranging from 5-15knts. The biggest challenge, after significant rainfall, was the tidal flow. At the starting line, competitors were being forced upwind and over the line early by the tide. Meanwhile, at the top of the course, competitors were being forced downwind and had to be careful to avoid colliding with the course buoys.
This week, we congratulate the ‘Boat of the Day’ Isobel, Harriet, Massimo and Lauren from Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.
In second place was Cruising Yacht Club Of Australia‘s Will, Clare, Ollie and Ruby.
Coming in third today, with a win in the fourth race, was Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club‘s own Arthur, Elizabeth, Jack and Harry.
Created in 2001, the Interclub Challenge is a fleet racing series contested by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club and Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron with each Club hosting a stage of the series. Each stage consists of up to two teams from each Club, participating in a maximum of six races at each venue.
The next rounds are:
- RSYS – 16 June
- RPAYC – 23 June
- CYCA – 30 June
