The Governor’s Cup, the oldest international youth match racing regatta in the world, had its 59th edition this year. Twelve teams competed in the Governor’s Cup 22 sloops, hosted by Balboa Yacht Club. World Sailing Youth No. 1-ranked skipper Daniel represented RPAYC, racing alongside Louis Tilly and Charlie Verity at the 59th Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship. The team competed in the prestigious invitation-only event, which was previously won back-to-back by Murray Gordon in 2004 and 2005.

The turning point for the crew came in Round Robin 2, where they were among the form teams of the regatta. They won 8 of their 11 matches (73%), improving their overall record to 13 wins and 9 losses, which lifted them to 5th overall at the completion of the round robins.

RPAYC sailor Daniel Kemp remained firmly in contention throughout the Round Robin stage, finishing tied on 13 wins with Morgan Pinckney (USA) and Sam Scott (NZ). Although the tiebreak ultimately saw Morgan Pinckney advance, Kemp’s strong performance against an international fleet highlighted his skill and experience on the world stage.

Daniel Kemp, Louis Tilly and Charlie Verity can be extremely proud of their performance at the 59th Governor’s Cup. Looking beyond the final placings, their regatta tells the story of a crew that improved steadily, qualified comfortably for the finals, and defeated some of the world’s best young match racing teams.
