Update provided by Jervis Tilly (RPAYC WASZP sailor)
The WASZP Queensland State Championships were held over the weekend of 28-29 Oct. Expertly hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, the event was a great success with 16 year old North Queensland sailor, Nicholas Dunne, winning and retaining his state championship title.
Saturday saw the fleet held ashore for 3 hours as gusts over 30kts drove rain across Brisbane. This briefly moderated, allowing 2 good races and then a third in trying conditions (finishing with 25kts and a steep chop kicked up by an outgoing current).
Sunday was a glorious day with light winds and plenty of sunshine. Racing was initially a bit stop start until the breeze unexpectedly filled in, allowing excellent racing prior to the mid afternoon cut-off.
There were four RPAYC competitors who all did the club proud. Louis Tilly tied for first, but was pressed into second on a count-back, and Will Troop, in a break-through performance took 3rd. Jervis Tilly was first senior / 5th overall, and RPAYC WASZP Fleet rep Gary Essex took out 8th.
The next WASZP Association event is the NSW Slalom hosted at RPAYC 11-12 November.
