Pittwater, NSW – May 10, 2025
The Pittwater sparkled under a crisp autumn sun as Race 2 of the Lion Island Series, hosted by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, delivered an exhilarating day on the water. A strong fleet took to the start line, with additional buzz added by the arrival of the Beneteau Cup Regatta contenders, boosting competition and colour in equal measure.
Tensions were high as yachts jostled for position in the final countdown. Spinnakers were poised, crews perched on the rails, and the air was alive with shouted commands and laughter echoing over the bay. The pin-end of the start line was a hive of activity, with race officers watching intently for any premature moves with the boat end of the line watching on as boats edged ever so closer to them.
And move they did — a few too soon. In both Division 1 and Division 2, some over-eager starters forced the raising of the Individual Recall Flag, sending a handful of yachts back behind the line to restart, adding a tense twist for those crews. Meanwhile, others nailed the timing with precision, charging ahead cleanly as the starter’s horn blasted across Pittwater.

With their sails filled and the race underway, the fleet turned its focus toward Lion Island (via the Coasters Retreat Mark), navigating shifting breezes and close-quarter duels in a tactical dash up the bay. The mix of seasoned competitors and fresh faces from the Beneteau fleet added a dynamic edge, showcasing the vibrant spirit and competitive heart of local sailing.
Pacesetter, helmed by Andy MacPhail, led the charge, taking the early lead and front-running Lion Island. Hotley on their stern were the VxOne’s.
As the race unfolded, strategy, teamwork, and a touch of luck played their part. Those who recovered from early errors chased hard to regain ground, while front-runners fended off challengers on every leg.

Pacesetter maintained her lead to cross the finish line first and took 3rd place overall on PHS results in Division 4 with the Committee boat setup north of Scotland Island.
