Congratulations to our Youth Development team for placing fifth at the Australian Youth Match Racing Championships last week!
The team of Daniel Kemp (skipper), D’Arcy Kemp, Lachlan Wallace, Charlie Verity and Isabella Holdsworth competed at the event held on Matilda Bay from the Royal Perth Yacht Club on their brand-new fleet of Elliott 7s.
The conditions were atypical for Perth this time of year, with a 20+kt gradient driven Nor westerly with periodic rain-driven squalls into the high 20s. The rain and pressure eased into the tail end of the week. The conditions and terrain made for some very shifty conditions on the race area. Due to the limited navigable area, the racing was quite a short course but there was plenty of width to the course.
For the most part, the team sailed very well and were even able to take the only race win against regatta winner Cole Tapper from the CYCA. Unfortunately, a pair of costly losses deprived the team of a berth in the semi-finals, relegating the team to the sail-offs, which they won, securing them fifth position.
This was the first time this event has been run since 2019 and the team and coach are very happy with their performance given Daniel was the second youngest skipper.
The Club congratulates the winners and thanks RPYC for their hospitality.
Daniel and team will compete at the Captain John Piper Regatta at the CYCA this weekend, along with the YD Women’s team, skippered by Olivia Williams making their match racing debut.
Last month at the Sailing Champions League Asia-Pacific final, RPAYC qualified for two of the Sailing Champions League World Finals in Travemünde, Germany (Open) and in Kiel, Germany (Youth) to be skippered by Hugo Butterworth and Daniel Kemp respectively. The club will be holding a fundraising night this Saturday evening 6.30pm onwards.
The sailors would be most grateful for the support of members to ensure that our sailors can attend this prestigious event.
