The third round of the Centreboard Icebreaker Winter Series welcomed more than 20 boats to RPAYC, with a fantastic mix of classes taking to the water, including Optimists, ILCAs (Lasers), 29ers, Windsurfers, a SKUD and Multihulls.
Competitors were greeted with better-than-expected westerly breezes throughout the morning, providing ideal conditions for an enjoyable day of racing. The race committee made the most of the breeze, successfully completing all three scheduled races before the wind began to ease during the final race in the Big Pond. Sailors were challenged by changing conditions throughout the day, rewarding those who adapted quickly and sailed consistently across the day.
Optimist Intermediate Fleet
Congratulations to Lara Dorling on Lord Lion, who won two of the three races to claim the Intermediate Optimist division. Well done to Coa Holland on Nauti Boy, who finished second, while Olivia Dorling on Fish rounded out the podium in third place. It was fantastic to see the Intermediate fleet continuing to gain confidence and experience in a racing environment.
Optimist Open Fleet
Congratulations to Oliver Sun on Better Knot, who took out the Open Fleet after winning two of the three races. Lavinia Liu on Sailfish sailed consistently to finish second overall after winning the opening race, while Bono Svacek on Riptide secured third place. The racing was close throughout the fleet, with strong competition across all three races.
Mixed Single-Handed
Well done to Jan Scholten on The Left Lane, who completed a clean sweep of the division by winning all three races. Phillip Malcolm finished in second place after a consistent performance across the day.
Multihull
Congratulations to Angus Musgrove aboard Thunder Buddy, who delivered a dominant performance, winning two of the three races to claim overall first place. David Fisher and the crew of The Barbaloots sailed consistently throughout the day to secure second place, while Nick Elliott and Niall Powers on Slider rounded out the podium with a well-earned third place.
A big thank you to all competitors, families and volunteers who supported the day. Special thanks go to our volunteer race committee, led by Race Officer Mark Dorling, whose planning and commitment ensured another safe and successful day of racing. Events like the Icebreaker Series simply wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our volunteers, both on and off the water.
