Commodore Robert McClelland shares the following message with members:
Good evening, everyone, and welcome.
The Lighting of the Fire is one of the great traditions of the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, going back many decades.
In many ways, it’s one of the oldest traditions known to mankind. Long before yacht clubs, marinas and even sailing itself, people gathered around a fire. It marked the changing of the seasons, brought people together, and was a place to share stories, friendships and experiences.
That’s really what tonight is all about.
As another sailing season comes to an end and winter arrives on Pittwater, it’s an opportunity to reflect on a fantastic year for our Club and to celebrate the people who make this place such a special community.
Tonight’s guest of honour is someone who embodies much of what this Club is about.
As last year’s Clubman of the Year, Peter Farrugia has given this Club not just his time and energy, but his humour, enthusiasm and friendship. Whether it’s racing offshore, helping organise major events, encouraging participation, or simply bringing people together, Pete has always thrown himself into Club life with both hands.
As I said when presenting his award, Pete has helped foster a culture of “yes we can” rather than “no we can’t” — making events bigger, better, more welcoming and more enjoyable for members.
And, of course, he’s also reminded us that sailing should be fun.
Kind regards,
Robert McClelland
