Round 2 Hosted by RPAYC
Round 2 of the Interclub Challenge was hosted by Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club on Sunday 6 June 2021. 6 teams competed representing the CYCA, NCYC and RPAYC.
Racing got underway in a light south westerly breeze following the early morning Dustbuster One Design series. The fading breeze held in long enough for Race Officer Ted Anderson to get two races away for the sailors to compete in very close, slow, and shifty racing!
The two RPAYC Intermediate Youth Development teams did very well to be amongst the action, despite being lined up against some very strong teams from the CYCA and NCYC.
Liam Parker, skipper of RPAYC team #1, showed some great promise throughout the two races despite only scoring a 4th and 5th. Parker’s team had some fantastic starts but were unfortunately caught out by the big wind shifts on the race course! Sophie Aitken skippered the second RPAYC team to a 3rd and 5th place in the day, and displayed some excellent symmetrical spinnaker floating with no pole to the delight of the RPAYC coaches!
At the end of the day Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club are still leading the Interclub Challenge on 23 points, followed by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia on 46 points. RPAYC are in 3rd position overall with 68 points, and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron are yet to take part in a round of the challenge.
Thank you to Race Officer Ted Anderson, Rob & Virginia McClelland for assisting onboard the committee boat (and again Rob for assisting with a protest decision), Michael Lockley for the lending of his RIB to assist on the day, and all of the teams that attended.
The next round of the Interclub Challenge will be at CYCA on 20 June 2021.
