The Cruising Division held its first “competitive cruise” last weekend since the Lake Macquarie Christmas Cruise, with the fleet enjoying a light-wind sail to Refuge Bay. All boats remained in contact on Channel 77, creating plenty of camaraderie and entertainment throughout the day.
One of the highlights came from Linda aboard Athena (pictured with the first prize medallion), who kept spirits high as the fleet searched for breeze. While some skippers were becoming frustrated by the conditions, Linda encouraged everyone over the VHF, saying, “Come on guys, I can see a wind line coming from offshore, hang in there!”
Ann aboard Waterbird II also sent a memorable WhatsApp message: “I have a very frustrated skipper. Send some motivation please so he doesn’t pack it in on me!”. As the race unfolded and
Athena sailed past under spinnaker, Ann was quick to challenge Roger with, “Come on Rog, where’s our spinnaker?” Clearly, the competitive spirit was alive and well.
On Medusa, Sally showed patience and determination in the tricky conditions around West Head. Rather than resorting to their engine, and even though out of contention, she elected to keep sailing and make the most of the situation, saying they would simply “enjoy a nice lunch” while working their way down the Cowan River in the light airs.
Following the presentation ceremony, Monica was heard discussing her experiences at the helm, observing that steering in stronger winds can sometimes be easier than in light and variable conditions, a reflection of the confidence and skills being developed throughout the fleet.
What stood out most during the weekend was the enthusiasm and engagement of all participants. The competitive cruise format added an extra dimension to the day’s sailing, and it was wonderful to see so many crew members actively involved in sail selection, boat handling, navigation and tactical decisions.
The strength of the husband-and-wife teams within the Cruising Division continues to grow, with many crews embracing new challenges together and building their skills with every event. The confidence, experience and enjoyment on display throughout the fleet were a credit to everyone involved and contributed greatly to the success of the day.
Naturally, there were the usual sundowners that afternoon, which turned more into a party aboard the ‘Heavens Gate’ catamaran.
