Day 1 of the Mick Hole Winter Regatta: Big Fleets, Light Winds, and a Black Flag Warning

Pittwater, NSW – Saturday 19 July 2025

The opening day of the Mick Hole Winter Regatta delivered classic winter racing conditions on Pittwater, as 29  yachts lined up for a cool but exciting day on the water. Competing fleets included Etchells, VxOnes, Elliott 7s, and Multihulls, with racing getting underway at 1020 hours in a brisk 12 degrees.

VxOne & Elliotts Line upped for a perfect start

A light 8-knot westerly breeze greeted competitors early on, gradually building throughout the morning to deliver clean tactical racing, at least after a few early ‘hiccups’ by competitors. Both the Etchells and Sportsboat fleets were clearly keen to shake off the winter cobwebs, with the Etchells Class jumping the gun in Race 1 and the Sportsboats in Race 2, forcing general recalls. The race committee quickly asserted control, hoisting the Black Flag and delivering a cheeky broadcast reminder: “We’re not having any of that”. Red alerts across the Vakaros onboard displays lit up like Christmas Trees.

With order restored, the restart saw well-timed starts across the board, and fleets spread quickly across Pittwater under a now-steady 10–12 knot breeze. The multihulls thrived in the conditions, lifting out of the water and charging past much of the competition with exhilarating speed.

But Pittwater had one last twist in store. By Race 3, the breeze evaporated, turning the course into a glassy, frozen lake. Fleets stalled mid-race, struggling to complete the first lap of two. Reading the conditions, the race committee promptly weighed anchor and moved to finish the fleets at the top mark, a wise decision with boats at a standstill. The decision was made to abandon the race and send the fleets home under tow.

With more action ahead, Day 2 promises another test of skill and patience on the winter waters of Pittwater.

Four races are scheduled with a 1000hrs start.
