During a visit last week to Auckland, I had the pleasure of meeting Nick Hanson, Commodore of the Royal Akarana Yacht Club (RAYC), along with their General Manager, Ray, to discuss the upcoming Sydney to Auckland Ocean Race in October 2025.
Our discussions covered several key topics, including arrangements for finishing yachts, public relations leading up to the event, and strategies to encourage more New Zealand yachts to participate in the race from Sydney to Auckland.
The RAYC, recognized as New Zealand’s premier ocean racing club, has a strong reputation for organizing major races such as the Auckland to Noumea and Auckland to Fiji events. They also boast a thriving sailing academy and offer dinghy classes for schools and other groups, making their club very similar in ethos to our own.
Nick shared exciting news about their recent acquisition of a 10-meter Cougar Cat, which will enhance their on-water race management capabilities, including start and finish line operations, photography, and welcoming incoming yachts. This investment will undoubtedly add a professional touch to next year’s race.
While in Auckland, I also met with Charlotte Palmer from the Auckland City Council, who manages Jellicoe Wharf—our designated berth for arriving yachts. Charlotte confirmed that the wharf is booked for us from 11–24 October 2025. This timeline will provide arriving boats ample time to settle before competing in the iconic 120-mile Coastal Classic race from Auckland to Russell in the Bay of Islands, starting on 24 October.
The council has committed to providing facilities such as toilets and storage containers, and they are excited to welcome our fleet to Auckland.

Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare for this landmark event!
