CHARTING THE COURSE
An update from the Board Chairman.
Dear Members,
Welcome to the first of what will become a regular monthly update from the Board. Each month, I will share some of the key matters being discussed and the work underway to support the Club’s future.
There was plenty on the agenda at our August meeting, including some exciting progress in several important areas.
Planning for Our Future
The Board recently received a presentation from the Strategic Planning Steering Group, led by Peter Byford. A great deal of work has gone into this process, providing valuable insights and a strong foundation for the Club’s future direction. This is in addition to the member survey and focus group feedback, which Commodore Julia Hornsby, will be progressively sharing results with members over the coming months.
The Steering Group is now preparing a shorter and more accessible strategic roadmap that will clearly outline the key priorities and recommendations. This will be presented to the Board in September, with the Commodore then updating members on the next stages. We look forward to sharing more with you as this important work progresses.
Financial and Long-Term Planning
The Board reviewed the Club’s current financial position, budget performance and longer-term capital requirements.
We also looked ahead, reviewing high-level financial forecasts for the next 10 years, including considering the significant projects required to maintain and improve our facilities.
This includes the progressive replacement of marina arms B to G, beginning with G Arm, which is expected to be replaced within the next 12 months.
More broadly, the Board is taking a fresh look at the entire marina and Club grounds. Our aim is to ensure the Alfreds remains relevant, sustainable and well equipped to support the changing needs of sailing and our members well into the future.
I am pleased to advise members that, each month, the Board formally resolves that the Club remains solvent and able to meet its financial commitments. The Board has been able to make this resolution with confidence, reflecting the Club’s sound financial management and the strong oversight provided by Management, the Finance Committee and the Board.
Committees and Governance
Following the Annual General Meeting, the Board has appointed the Club’s committees for the coming 12 months.
Committee Chairs will shortly receive confirmation of their members, together with updated charters. Each committee will also have clear responsibilities for identifying and managing risks within its area. Our committees make an important contribution to the Club, and we thank everyone who has volunteered their time and expertise.
A New Coach Boat Is Coming
The Board approved the purchase of a replacement coach boat to support our youth sailing and Youth Development programs.
The new boat is expected to arrive within the next month and will be a very welcome addition to the Club’s fleet. It will provide important on-water support for our young sailors, coaches and development programs.
Giving Old Sails a New Life
The Board also supported an exciting sail recycling initiative connected with manufacturing and employment opportunities in Vanuatu.
The Club will work with Leon Wilson to coordinate and promote a sail collection day or weekend, giving members an opportunity to responsibly dispose of old or unused sails and support a worthwhile initiative at the same time. Further details will be shared shortly.
A great deal is happening across the Club, and the Board remains focused on ensuring the Alfreds is well governed, financially sustainable, and ready to meet the future needs of our members.
