Rhapsody claims a podium finish, beautifully restored Antares showcases classic yacht craftsmanship, Sylvia represents RPAYC in the Couta Boat Division, and Vittoria remains a welcome sight on the classic yacht scene at the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club’s celebration of traditional sailing.

The Sydney Amateur Sailing Club’s (SASC) Gaffers Day on Sunday, 11 October 2026, provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate traditional sailing, enjoy the company of fellow sailors and showcase the timeless appeal of classic yachts on Sydney Harbour.

The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) was represented across the Metre Boat, Couta Boat and Bermudian divisions, with members enjoying a day of friendly competition and camaraderie. RPAYC Commodore Julia Hornsby was also among those attending, joining members and crews for a memorable day on and off the water. Adding to the occasion were the stirring sounds of the bagpipes and the traditional firing of the cannon, creating a wonderful sense of ceremony and atmosphere for this celebration of sailing heritage.

A glimpse of sailing history

One of the great pleasures of Gaffers Day was seeing the remarkable collection of classic yachts take to Sydney Harbour, with some vessels dating back to the nineteenth century. A particular highlight was Sayonara, built in 1897 and designed by renowned Scottish naval architect William Fife III. Seeing this historic yacht gracing Sydney Harbour in full flight was a memorable sight and a reminder of the extraordinary craftsmanship and enduring design that have kept these vessels sailing for generations.

With the conditions delivering what was described as “champagne sailing”, the fleet enjoyed a wonderful day on the water. It was a fitting setting for these beautiful yachts, some more than a century old, to demonstrate that their appeal and sailing capabilities remain undiminished.

Strong performances across the fleet

In the Metre Boat Division – Course C, Rhapsody, skippered by Chris Hancock, delivered a strong result for RPAYC, finishing third in an 11-boat fleet. Rhapsody completed the course in an elapsed time of 1 hour, 42 minutes and 33 seconds, securing a well-earned podium finish.

Antares, the beautifully restored 5.5 Metre yacht skippered by Theresa Hamilton, also represented RPAYC in the division, finishing ninth with an elapsed time of 1 hour, 50 minutes and 25 seconds. Her elegant presentation and restored condition were a wonderful reflection of the care, dedication and craftsmanship that help preserve these classic yachts for future generations to enjoy.

In the Bermudian Division 1 – Course C, Vittoria, skippered by Alan Reece, finished seventh in a 12-boat fleet, recording an elapsed time of 1 hour, 53 minutes and 20 seconds. Always a welcome sight on the classic yacht scene, Vittoria added to RPAYC’s strong representation and was a fitting part of the day’s celebration of traditional sailing.

Sylvia represents RPAYC in the Couta Boat Division

RPAYC was also represented in the Couta Boat Division by Sylvia, sailed by Larry Eastwood. Sylvia finished eighth in a strong fleet of traditional wooden boats, completing the course in an elapsed time of 58 minutes and 24 seconds.

A heartfelt thank you to SASC

RPAYC extends its sincere thanks to the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club, its members and the many volunteers who worked so hard to make Gaffers Day such an enjoyable occasion. The hospitality extended to RPAYC members and crews, including Commodore Julia Hornsby, was greatly appreciated. The warm welcome, organisation and generosity shown by the SASC community helped make the day memorable both on and off the water.

Events such as Gaffers Day demonstrate the strength of the sailing community and the value of clubs coming together to celebrate their shared passion for the sport.

Congratulations to all RPAYC skippers and crews who took part, and thanks again to SASC, its members and volunteers for a wonderful day on Sydney Harbour.
