For the second time in 3 years RPAYC’s Louis Tilly is the NSW WASZP State Champion winning over half the races and dropping two 3rd places from 8 completed races.  In a tough event sailed over the weekend of 15/16 February from the Woollahra Sailing Club, Louis held off Marshall Day (Belmont) and defending champion, Will Troop (RPAYC).  This caps off a dominant season for Louis now national and state champion in both windward-leeward and slalom/sprint formats… plus his 3-peet in the Sydney SailGP Inspire event.

Top Female was Hanaoko Tomashima from Woollahra SC.

The fleet featured many visiting sailors including from Japan (2), WA (2), Victoria (2) and Queensland.  The Grand Prix Finish used in WASZP racing encourages sailors of all abilities by allowing scoring for progression around the race course. The range at this event was from worlds podium to first-time racing.   Other RPAYC sailors included Chris Clegg, Olle Ross, Charlie Snell, Jervis Tilly (1st Super Master) and Garry Essex.

The fleet was using the new high-performance WASZP v2 rudders. This recent upgrade allowed four races to be completed on Saturday afternoon in a fading Southeasterly to the west of Shark Island on Sydney Harbour. This tightly bounded race area presents spectacular views of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and a veritable flotilla of leisure/pleasure boats to navigate.

Sunday called for an early start in Rose Bay and four more excellent but challenging races were completed in a gusty, building Southerly. At the ensuing presentation, WSC officials praised and rewarded the efforts of the various volunteers.

In accepting the NSW State Championship trophy, Louis thanked the competitors, race officials and his sponsors Zhik, Vakaros and Harken as well as his training partner, Will Troop.
