The Club has an important responsibility to care for and protect the environment. We’re committed to improving environmental management systems and practices across our activities to reduce our footprint on our environment.
Members may notice the Doyle Bros large orange trucks weaving their way through the car park. We selected Doyle Bros’ as our waste contractor based on their competitive pricing and due to their commitment to the protection of the environment.
Doyle Bros’ hold and maintain a ‘GECA Certification’, GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia) has an essential role in consumer and commercial markets to facilitate improvement in the sustainability of products and services to reduce environmental impacts. GECA standards are developed using ISO 14024 principles for global best practice and certification is evidence that Doyle Bros waste service meets world-class environmental standards.
In order to achieve GECA certification, Doyle Bros undergo regular independent assessment (conducted by ‘Bureau Veritas’ a world leader in independent testing, inspection and certification) and must achieve 27 criteria points to hold the GECA certification.
Doyle Bros are committed to the preservation and protection of our environment and achieve a 90% waste diversion rate!
Doyle Bros provides the Club with waste collection services 6 days a week. Members and visitors at the Club may notice Doyle Bros drivers emptying the Commingled Recycling with the General Waste bins, don’t be alarmed!
Doyle Bros collect Club bins, the waste is then taken to a state-of-the-art sorting plant where it is separated, processed, and recycled. The Dry Residual Waste fractions are processed into Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF). Processed Engineered Fuel is a partial replacement for fossil fuels in the manufacturing process for cement kilns, rather than mining natural resources. This is an exceptional outcome and provides a double carbon benefit, in reducing landfill emissions and lower emissions created compared to coal in the cement manufacturing process!
Doyle Bros’ Materials Recovery Facility, also known as “The Lab” has a state of the art European sorting and separating technology recovering recycling materials including plastic, aluminium, glass, paper /cardboard. After sorting and separation of recoverable recycling materials the residual non-recyclable waste is taken to the PEF plant and manufactured into “Refuse Derived Fuel” (RDF) which is another fossil fuel alternative. RDF production is endorsed by the NSW EPA and complies with the EPA Energy Waste Policy.
What happens with the recovered recycled materials from the Club when it’s processed at “The Lab”?
Plastics – Recyclable plastics are recovered and on-sold to Doyles recycling partner to be pelletised and re-purposed into new plastic packaging products. The remaining non-recyclable fragments are processed into Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF).
Aluminium and Metal – Are extracted out via multiple high-powered magnets that overhang conveyors through the MRF and materials are then on-sold to Doyle Bros metal recycling partner to be re-purposed into new steel product.
Paper and Cardboard – Is the largest volume of recovered recycled material. Doyle Bros on-sells the recovered materials to their long-time partner OPAL, who supply baled paper and cardboard to be re-purposed into new Paper and Cardboard products, creating a full circular economy!
Glass – Unfortunately glass is non-recoverable through the MRF Process and is a residual / landfill waste.
The Club and Doyle Bros encourage Members and visitors to take glass bottles e.g. beer bottles (excluding wine bottles) with them, and utilising the nearest Return & Earn Depot for a 10c Refund (Pittwater RSL, Mona Vale). At present, wine bottles are not eligible for a refund through the scheme, the NSE EPA is currently planning to expand the program to include larger containers.
