RPAYC are excited to announce that the Lion Island Series currently has 43 entrants with the list growing daily. The Lion Island Series runs over four consecutive Saturday afternoons throughout May (8th – 29th May 2021).
Returning to defend their title after winning PHS Division 1 last year is Ray Hudson and his team onboard XS Moment. Looking ahead to this years series, XS Moment are hopeful for 10 to 12 knots minimum to really get her going up to almost any strength as she is a very stable and quite stiff yacht that can carry good sail area in strong conditions. Ray’s secret to winning last year was a well prepared boat setup with regular crew available for most races to ensure XS Moment was well trimmed throughout the series.
When we asked Ray what he enjoyed about the Lion Island Series he commented: ‘The challenge of picking the best route to round Lion Island cleanly – the races are generally won & lost at this point and the exit from Lion Island and line across towards West Head is critical. It is also a pleasant day out on the water and great for keeping the crew going after the main season has finished. Our crew continues to evolve and we are training some new younger crew members to hopefully continue with XS Moment throughout our ocean racing programme this year which will include another Sydney to Hobart race. Three new faces have been added to augment the core of experienced crew backing up from last year.’
