The 7th edition of the Sun Hung Kai &Co. Hong Kong Race Week (which this year also incorporated the inaugural 29er Asian Championship) came to a close over the weekend. RPAYC sailors Piper Attwood and Annabelle Sampson traveled to Hong Kong to compete in the event.
Piper and Annabelle had a huge week competing against crews from Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong and of course Australia. Piper and Annabelle were hosted by a local 29er family who had earlier this year travelled to Lake Macquarie for our own 29er Nationals and very generously loaned them their training boat for the regatta. With only 2 days to get the boat set up and see at least some of the sights of Hong Kong they were pretty busy prior to the regatta but they did manage to squeeze in a couple of tourist opportunities. The regatta waters were quite challenging with quite a bit of chop, maybe from the volume of commercial traffic and quite light winds which glassed out on the last day for an N over A.
RHKYC were incredible hosts and looked after all the sailors from a range of different classes very well. The swag bags were very impressive and they both arrived home with more than they left with! They are both quite proud of their efforts given the unfamiliar location, accomodations and vessel finishing 8th overall and 2nd in their age group.
They would particularly like to thank RHKYC and James, Hannah and Emily Polson for making the trip possible.
