Friends of David Booth Memorial Race 2025

Article written by Robert McClelland, Commodore RPAYC

On a Perfect Pittwater afternoon, the fleet for the 2025 David Booth Memorial Race set sail, taking on a course that stretched across Broken Bay, around Lion Island, and back.

With a steady 14 to 15 knots of breeze, 31 yachts lined up for a pursuit start, setting off in handicap order. The Couta boats had the lead, making the most of the ideal sailing conditions to stay ahead throughout the race.

In Division Three, Tenacity, helmed by Bob Fowler, put on a commanding performance, leading from start to finish to claim the David Booth Trophy for the division.

In Division Two, Peter Higgins’ sleek Far East 28, Sparrow, sailed a flawless race, crossing the line first and securing the David Booth Regatta Trophy for her division.

Meanwhile, in a fitting tribute to David Booth, his great mate John Bacon, at the helm of Yacht Q, started second to last but methodically worked his way through the fleet. In a remarkable feat, he overtook every boat ahead of him to claim victory in Division One, winning the David Booth Regatta for 2025.

Back at the clubhouse, sailors and supporters came together for the post-race celebrations. Steve Stuart delivered a moving tribute to David Booth, reflecting on his legacy and the lasting impact he has had on the RPAYC community.

The official presentations followed, with Suellen and the Commodore awarding the trophies to the deserving winners, rounding off a fantastic day of racing and friendship on Pittwater.

Congratulations to our 2025 Friends of David Booth Memorial Race winners:

Div 1: Q – John Bacon
Div 2: Sparrow – Peter Higgins
Div 3: Sylvia – Bob Fowler

Commodore’s Speech from 2025 presentation

“Afternoon, everyone.

As we gather here at the Alfreds after another great day of racing, it’s fitting we take a moment to remember David Booth—Boothy to most of us.

Boothy wasn’t just a bloke who turned up to sail—he lived and breathed it. Three times a week, rain, hail, or shine, you’d see him out there, always ready with a smile, a bit of banter, and time for anyone who crossed his path.

It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly nine years since that day on Pittwater. A quiet breeze, a day like any other—and then the unthinkable. But Boothy’s spirit never left. It’s in the hustle at the start line, the handshake after a hard race, and the stories shared over a drink back at the club.

This race isn’t just about the competition—it’s about keeping Boothy’s memory alive. So as we hand out the awards this afternoon,, let’s also celebrate a bloke who made this club—and all of us—better.

Here’s to Boothy—sorely missed, but always with us. Cheers, mate.”
