VX one Australian mid-Winters

As the VX one fleet steadily grows at the club, the new team from VeXatious went north over the Kings Holiday weekend to fly the RPAYC flag.  Whilst there, they formally invited the fleet to the Alfreds for the upcoming NSW state championships in December and the 2025 Nationals in January… and got a former RQYS commodore to christen their boat!

The VX one Aussie midwinters have been run from RQYS for a number of years.  This year saw 21 of these fun and fast sports boats complete 9 races over 3 days.

Conditions were generally blue sky 8-10 knot westerlies which offered opportunities from “head out of the boat” sailing.  However, there was still a huge premium on crew work and boat speed.  There were also outlier stronger breeze races providing exciting planing downwind plus the occasional glass-out to contend with.

The event was highly competitive and was won by the reigning multiple national champions on Mack One skippered by Ben Franklin followed by Greg Hall (2nd) and Brayden Daunt (3rd); all from RQYS.  There were prizes for first female, youth and master.  VaXatious came in a creditable 8th.  Full results can be found here

Given how easy to transport and rig the VX has proven to be and how good an event RQYS put on, there is already a strong commitment to have more RPAYC boats at next year’s event.
