America’s Cup 2027 | RPAYC Supporters Travel Group

The recent announcement of an Australian Team to enter the America’s Cup in 2027 has sparked quite a bit of interest from our members, particularly now that several Club members will be participating.

We are in discussions with a travel agency to research a group travel plan to attend the Louis Vuitton Regatta and the America’s Cup.

The America’s Cup starts on 10th July 2027. The official dates for the Louis Vuitton Regatta haven’t been announced yet, but there is usually a 1-week break between the LV and AC. That means the LV could be held around 24th June to 3rd July.

Accommodation booking will be at a premium when the dates are officially announced, so we are keen to get in early with a group booking.

We are seeking Expressions of Interest from our Club members to firm up pricing and availability arrangements.

First Friday – “Above the Line: Living and Leading with Heart”

Join us for First Friday, Dinner & Guest Speakers Stephen and Dr Mara Klemich.

Prior to their recent retirement, they co-wrote the book “Above the Line: Living and Leading with Heart” and ran an international consulting company based in London. Part of their consulting work included taking the classroom into the outdoors to draw personal and teambuilding insights from real-life challenges in nature.

They are now new members of the RPAYC. Their topic for presentation at First Friday will share their experiences as a husband and wife team mountaineering and rock climbing, including preparation, safety, trust and the climbers mindset from which there will be many analogies with our own experiences in sailing, particularly husband and wife cruising teams.

The mountains they will discuss include ascents of the Matterhorn, the Eiger, Mont Blanc, the Jungfrau, Imja Tse, and Lobuche.

Stephen and Mara will also reflect on their experience in 1996 while climbing Lobuche, at the time of the tragic Rob Hall disaster on Mount Everest. As they approached the summit of Lobuche, they observed a severe weather front moving in and made the decision to turn back just 100 metres short of the top. One client in particular was extremely unhappy with their decision.

That same weather system struck the nearby Everest, where eight climbers lost their lives after continuing their ascent rather than turning back, in part due to client pressure. These events later became the subject of Jon Krakauer’s book Into Thin Air.

For our sailing group, this story carries a powerful and familiar lesson. Many of us have experienced the pressure of meeting pre arranged schedules—perhaps to rendezvous with family or friends—only to later realise that the conditions were telling us to stop. Stephen and Mara’s decision to turn back when compared with the Everest tragedy highlights the importance of recognising when to turn back, or perhaps not even set forth, even when expectations or commitments make that decision difficult.

Many of the experiences which they will share will have strong analogies with our own cruising preparation and teamwork as husband-and-wife teams.

The presentation will also share experiences rock climbing and also climbing on the Via Ferrata of the Swiss/Italian Alps. Via Ferrata means iron road and were iron reinforcing rods placed into the side of cliffs for military purposes to allow soldiers to traverse sheer rock faces during World War 1.

During dinner, Tony Nossiter will also give us a short update on developments regarding the revision of the cruising audit requirements.

Team AUS second in the Youth Match Racing Worlds in Middelfart, Denmark

Team USA wins the Youth Match Racing Worlds – powered by Bunker One

After a week of intense racing in the Danish heatwave, it all came down to the last 200 metres in race five of five in the final. Morgan Pinckney, Kelly Holthus, Cam Spriggs, Jacob Posner, Alice Schmid are the 2026 world champions.

June 25, 2026 – Middelfart, Denmark: What a week! That is pretty much the general feeling among sailors, officials, event organizers, sponsors and spectators as the junior match racing world championship comes to an end.

A heatwave has made sure everything from the temperatures to the intensity on the race course has been close to the boiling point. Even though the 12 teams from 11 nations have been tested to the limit of their abilities and stamina, the race committee completed all 104 races despite the wind being light and shifty throughout the race week.

For the American team the victory did not come easy. After a five boat tie after the round robin, Morgen Pinckney and his team members – Kelly Holthus, Cam Spriggs, Jacob Posner and Alice Schmid – had to fight their way through the semis facing the strong French team, and then meet number two on the world ranking list, Australian skipper Daniel Kemp.

The final was undecided after four races, and it all came down to the last race of the series.

– Even though we got the start right, and the umpires gave Daniel (Kemp, AUS) a penalty, I got a little nervous on the first beat, and he reeled us back in. He got ahead and killed his penalty, then we got ahead just before the last windward mark and managed to stay in the lead until the finish thanks to great crew work – I am so happy to be sailing with these guys, said Morgan Pickney after their gold medal was secured.

For Australien skipper Daniel Kemp the silver medal was not what they had hoped for:

– Morgan gave us a penalty in the pre-start, but we managed to fight our way back. Even though we managed to do our penalty while we were ahead, Morgan and his fought their way back. So, right now the result stings a little but I am sure that we will be happy about the result in a couple of weeks, Daniel Kemp said moments after the last race.

– It has been a tricky week here in Middelfart with light winds and strong current. We didn’t sail up to our best in the semis, luckily we managed to get ourselves back into the game in the petit finals, and we are happy to finish with a bronze medal, Danish skipper Mathias Rossing said after the awards ceremony.

International regattas and events are import for Denmark and Middelfart

The championship is vital in order to give the future superstars of sailing an opportunity to compete and show their skills.

For the event partners, this sailing event has been yet another great opportunity to continue what has already been started with two world championships in Melges 24 and Women’s Match Racing World Championship back-to-back in Middelfart in 2015 and 2023:

– It has been a privilege this week to see the level these young athletes are able to sail these boats at and we are happy to be supporting this and other sailing events we’ve done together with GoSail plus our national and internal event partners. If GoSail gets to host more international regattas, we are more than ready to support future sailing regattas in Middelfar , Peter Zachariassen, CEO Bunker One, said moments before he presented the medals to the top three sailors at the world championship.

– The Match Racing World Championship in Middelfart underlines the importance of creating a showcase for the stars of the future. This week, the crews have had to make decisions in complex wind and weather conditions, with Mathias Rossing turning his home-water advantage into a bronze medal. That is exactly what makes international youth championships so valuable,” says Lars Lundov, CEO of Sport Event Denmark.

The newly elected mayor of the Middelfart Municipality is exited about the opportunities the newly renovated marina providers for this and future regattas:
– Middelfart has truly shown itself from its very best side in the middle of this heatwave. It has been fantastic to see the new marina come to life with thousands of people on the harbour, at the beach, by the bathhouse and along the waterfront in front of Sundhuset, where spectators have been able to watch the world’s best junior match racing sailors up close, says mayor Anders Møllegård.

– This is exactly the kind of life we hoped to create when the City Council, together with strong local forces, made the development of the marina possible. This week, we have seen how the area can bring together residents, visitors, tourists, sailors and the business community around an international event in the heart of Middelfart’s maritime setting, he continues.

The Youth Match Racing Worlds – powered by Bunker One – was the latest international sailing events hosted by the Danish sailing and event company, GoSail.

– We host between 200 and 250 events every year where we take non-sailors onboard our boats and teach them about sailing, communication and teamwork. International sailing regattas are our pedigree, and we would love to work together with World Sailing, Bunker One, Sport Event Denmark, the Danish Sailing Federation the municipality of Middelfart, our regional partner Destination Fyn and our local partners in more events, says Søren Mathiesen Laursen, CEO GoSail.

Kemp & Pinckney on course for finals at Youth Match Racing Worlds

Both teams lead their semi-finals 2–0 after another long and tricky day in the Danish heatwave.
June 24, 2026 – Middelfart, Denmark: As the clock passed 19:30 on Wednesday evening, the sailors returned to shore after almost 10 hours on the water in blazing sunshine and an extraordinary Danish heatwave.
The conditions had taken their toll on most of the teams, with sailors cooling off in the water during breaks or seeking shade below deck whenever possible.
The heat was also turned up on the racecourse, where the sailors once again showed impressive skill, despite all competitors being born in 2003 or later.
“We were definitely a bit fatigued today after a couple of long and warm days on the water. That caused us to make a few mistakes, but we learned from them. The current took a little while to figure out, and the pre-start ‘playground’ was right next to shore with very limited space. We struggled a bit with that at first, but finally managed to put it together against the British team,” said USA skipper Morgan Pinckney after his team’s 3–0 quarter-final win against Great Britain, skippered by Jamie Tylecote.

Pinckney and his crew then moved on to the semi-finals against French skipper Marin Micoulot, where the Americans continued their strong form with two wins before the race committee decided to end racing for the day.
“Despite the fatigue, we learned from the races against the Brits and were able to sail pretty quickly. We still made a few mistakes because of the long days in the sun, but we were able to recover and pull away. We are excited to go racing again tomorrow,” said Pinckney.
In the other semi-final, Daniel Kemp from Australia is on a roll after a strong day against both Danish teams.

First, Kemp secured a 3–0 quarter-final win against Victor Melchior before lining up against Mathias Rossing, who had finished second in the round robin.
“The breeze was pretty fluky this morning, so we were really happy to take the first win against Victor and his team. Then we were lucky to have a bit of a break and get out of the sun while the rest of the quarter-finals were decided before going back out to meet Rossing in the semis,” said Kemp.
“Both races against Mathias were really close, so we are very happy to take a 2–0 lead,” he added after a long day of racing against the Danes.
Thursday is the final day of racing at the Youth Match Racing Worlds 2026 – powered by Bunker One, and by late afternoon the new Youth Match Racing World Champion will be crowned in Middelfart.

The forecast for Thursday and final race day is the same as all other days at the World Championship in Middelfart this year: Light winds, plenty of sun and increasing heat.
