Sydney Harbour sets the stage for LGT Wealth Management Australia Cup

Sixteen boats across the TP52 and Super 40 divisions will line up on Sydney Harbour for the LGT Wealth Management Australia Cup, with five days of racing from Wednesday 28 October to Sunday 1 November.
Organised by the Australian TP52 Sailing Association and conducted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, the regatta brings weekday twilight racing together with a weekend of windward-leeward competition. The fleet features five boats in the TP52 division and 11 Super 40s. There are no discards in either division, so every race score counts.
David Doherty’s Matador brings strong form into the event after winning the 2026 Pallas Capital Gold Cup on both TPR and IRC. The TP52 has raced under several names through its international career, including Bribon, Beau Geste and Secret Men’s Business.
For Peter White’s First Light, the focus is on making a new lineup work. Tactician Gordon Maguire reports eight crew changes since Hamilton Island Race Week, more than half the team, with Clare Costanzo navigating alongside him.
“So fundamentally, we are starting again with a new lineup,” said First Light tactician Gordon Maguire.
“How will we do? That’s anyone’s guess; I’m hoping that we will build a solid crew for the future.”

First Light’s new roster adds another dimension to a regatta that brings emerging sailors together with experienced grand prix competitors. For TPR and SFPR handicap calculations, the chief judge’s published notice defines a youth sailor as someone who has not turned 26 on the first day of scheduled competition, 28 October.
That mix of emerging and experienced sailors is evident aboard Mark Spring’s Highly Sprung. Congressional Cup-winning skipper Cole Tapper calls tactics, with Kairos Racing teammate Max Brennan on main. Fellow winner George Richardson will step in for Max on Wednesday 28 October, while skiff veteran Dean Williams joins the afterguard.
After the twilight race on Friday 30 October, members of the Congressional Cup-winning Kairos Racing team will head across the harbour by boat to the Australian Sailing Awards, where they are finalists for Team of the Year.
Lee Hawksley’s Gusto, previously known as First Light, Fifty Two Hundred and Cougar II, adds another experienced campaigner to the TP52 division. The team’s Thursday lineup includes four youth sailors and three women. Completing the fleet is Virago, a Reichel/Pugh 52 one-off that has had a small refurbishment with a new engine and instruments.
The Super 40 fleet brings a mix of designs and campaigns, headed by Karl Kwok’s Beau Ideal. The 2025-launched Botin design, built by Carrington Boats, has Gavin Brady listed at the helm and Dean Barker on tactics for this event. Beau Ideal won the 2026 Super 40 Gold Cup standings on SFR, IRC and ORC.

Chris Dare’s Ambition, formerly Enterprise Next Generation, will use the Cup to test boat setup ideas, with no major changes to the boat since last year. The mixed inshore and offshore lineup includes two sailors under 23, with Jack Abbott calling tactics, Chris and son Lockie aboard, and father-and-son Carl and Ben Crafoord adding another family combination.
“We are using the Aus Cup to try out a few boat set up ideas,” said Ambition owner-skipper Chris Dare.
“Certainly a more Corinthian focus for us but we still are a competitive bunch.”
Anarchy’s ten-person lineup has Grant Pocklington driving, Mark Dorling calling tactics and three crew identified by the team as youth.
There are strong rumours that the team will step up to Matador for the next event. Across the circuit, new campaigns and boat upgrades point to continued growth. David Doherty has purchased Caro, now entered in the Rolex Sydney Hobart as Islero. Class president Craig Neil’s incoming Quest, formerly Mockingbird, is coming from the USA.

Bushranger, Peter Farrugia’s Bullwinkle 400, Ross Hennessy’s Condor, Edge (with Craig Neil at the helm for the event), Little Nico (with newcomer Christopher Mapp on the helm and Tom Spithill on tactics), Edward Cox’s Minerva and Scott Lawson’s Mittere also join the Super 40 fleet.
Mike Ritchie’s Revolver has always been a family affair. Designed by his father Bruce, the Ritchie 38 is a wooden build with carbon sheathing, sailed by what Mike describes as his young amateur team.
“She was designed by my dad, Bruce Ritchie. We love her like family,” said Revolver owner and skipper Mike Ritchie.
Fresh from racing together at the New York Yacht Club Women’s International with Shaw and Partners Women Racing, Juliet Costanzo and Sarah Parker will line up on Revolver, with Juliet on tactics and Sarah on main. Juliet’s sister Clare Costanzo, who called tactics in Newport, is new to navigation on First Light.
The wider Women Racing squad is also represented across the fleet: Katherine Dawson also joins Revolver, Lisa Denvir and Bayley Taylor sail on Anarchy, and Alice Tarnawski is aboard Edge. Women Racing co-founder Katie Spithill, who skippered the team in Newport, will join the commentary team alongside Peter Shipway and Sailor Girl, Nic Douglass.

Antill claims podium finish at Etchells Queensland Championship

Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club’s Jason Antill secured second overall, while fellow RPAYC skipper Dave Taylor finished tenth, at the 2026/27 Etchells Queensland State Championship. Hosted by Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on 24–25 October, the regatta brought together 16 boats for six races.

Sailing Northern Havoc (AUS 1119), Antill delivered a strong performance, highlighted by consecutive wins in races four and five and a second place in race three. After discarding his opening ninth, he finished with 15 points to secure the runner-up position, two points ahead of Kane Sinclair’s NGHAM. The championship went to JC Strong aboard Flying High, who finished on seven points.

Dave Taylor, skippering 2107 Racing (AUS 1449), completed the championship in tenth place on 48 points. His best result was fifth in race four, complemented by seventh in race two. Race four was a particular highlight for the Club, with both RPAYC boats finishing inside the top five as Antill took the win.

Congratulations to Jason, Dave and their crews on representing RPAYC in Queensland, with special recognition to the Northern Havoc team for their two race wins and podium finish.

Attention now turns to home waters, with RPAYC hosting the Etchells NSW State Championship from 20–22 November 2026.

A standout weekend for RPAYC’s Centreboard community

RPAYC’s Centreboard community had plenty to celebrate over the weekend, with sailors competing across multiple events, encouraging progress from our developing fleets and a national title coming home to the Club.

Leading the celebrations was RPAYC’s victory at the Australian Youth National Match Racing Championships in Geelong. The win marks the Club’s second consecutive title, following Daniel Kemp’s success in 2025—an outstanding achievement that highlights the strength of our Youth Development programme and the depth of talent progressing through the Club.

Our Optimist sailors also enjoyed valuable racing at the ACT Championships. Developing Open sailors continued their progress towards the front of the fleet, while our Intermediate sailors gained confidence and experience racing among the leading group.

Well done to everyone who represented RPAYC across the weekend! A special shout-out to:

RPAYC Sailors Take On the Coast Championships at Speers Point

Four Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club sailors flew the flag across the ILCA 4, 6, and 7 fleets at the NSW & ACT Coast Championships, hosted by Speers Point Amateur Sailing Club on Lake Macquarie over the weekend of 24–25 October.

NE on Saturday with NNW on Sunday (the hair dryer as they call it locally), fortunate to avoid any significant storms. Challenging conditions, up range, and gusty, with the occasional choc top sail.

In the 14-boat ILCA 4 fleet, Reuben Steele earned a solid ninth overall. Reuben showed great form with a weekend-best fifth place in race two, though a frustrating OCS in the final race proved a costly hurdle.

Sylvie Stannage showed the fleet how to sail in the ILCA 6, dominating every race, with Jenny Danks first GM. Danks led the RPAYC charge in the ILCA 6 fleet, sailing a impressively consistent series to take sixth overall in a competitive 25-boat division. Joining her in the ILCA 6 was Justin Steele, who marked his return to the class with a strong 12th-place finish. Justin steadily found his rhythm as the regatta went on, saving his best performance—a crisp fifth place—for the final race.

Over in the ILCA 7 fleet, Xander Bijkerk (2nd) kept Campbell Patton (1st) honest in the ILCA 7, with Nic Skulander in 4th. Phil Malcolm placed 17th overall while triumphantly wrapping up first place in the Great Grand Master category. Mind you, as the sole entry in the category, victory was effectively guaranteed the moment he launched! Having locked down his trophy on opening day, Phil wisely decided that discretion was the better part of valour on Sunday. Confronted by a gruelling forecast, and after a capsize on the way to the start which resulted in two lost water bottles and a drink of Lake Macquarie water he opted to leave the wild gusts to the others and retired undefeated to the clubhouse.

Speers Point was a perfect venue, welcoming competitors with grassy rigging areas and great hospitality. The weather kept everyone on their toes: Saturday delivered quite demanding 12 – 15 knot north-easterly, while Sunday was a more challenging day with a shifting 15+ knot north-to-north-westerly blowing heavy shifty puffs and deceptive lulls with some gusts over 20 knots.

Congratulations to Jenny, Reuben, Justin, and Phil for a wonderful weekend representing RPAYC on the Lake.

Opti ACT Championships

Canberra turned on a full range of conditions for the 2026 ACT Championships, with 3 races run on Saturday in 5-8 knots of breeze, and 4 races run in 15-25 knots on Sunday (with gusts over 30), it was certainly a great test for the fleet.

Within the Open fleet Oliver, Bono, Courtney and Jasmine all had some fantastic results. A very consistent Sunday for Oliver saw him finish the regatta in 9th and take out first placed 11 year old. Bono was 16th, Courtney 21st and Jasmine 22nd.

Within Inters it was girl power from team RPA, with Sylvie, Liv and Sienna all posting top 3 placings during the weekend. After some tight Sunday races in top end conditions Sylvie came away as first overall and first female, with Liv 4th and Sienna 9th.

Coach, Lachie Wallace provided great on water support, and the lots of tired sailors and parents braved the storms for the drive back to Sydney on Sunday evening.

Club Racing

On top of this, there was a day of normal Sunday Centreboard sailing at the club, proving that we can chew gum and walk at the same time. There was a good turnout from the Cats and from the WASZPs who lapped up the conditions especially when the change hit. All backed up an amazing group of volunteers to put the racing on including past Rear Commodore Mark Darling as Chief Race Officer.

Tilly’s unbeaten finals day delivers Australian youth match racing title

Louis Tilly and his Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club crew of William Hough, William Troop and Oliver Ross have won the 2026 Australian Youth Match Racing Championship, sweeping Ben Crafoord 3-0 in today’s final at Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

The RPAYC team won all five of their races on a grey final day on Corio Bay, with Tilly crediting his crew’s performance that helped him to recover from difficult positions.

Crafoord had won all three of the pair’s round-robin meetings, but Tilly reversed that record when the national title was on the line.

“It’s incredible. The three guys in front of me have just done an incredible job all week,” Tilly said.

“They really put in the hard yards today. They made me look pretty good.

“They definitely got me out of a couple of hard situations today, and just being able to sail the boat quick and get around Ben in the finals in some of those races.”

The championship was presented by DYSC Marine Supplies and hosted by Royal Geelong Yacht Club in conjunction with Australian Sailing.

Tilly began Sunday with a 2-0 semi-final win over Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s James Hayhoe before meeting Cruising Yacht Club of Australia skipper Crafoord in the best-of-five final.

His team then won the opening two races, leaving Crafoord needing three consecutive wins to take the title, however Tilly was too strong, clinching the third to complete an unbeaten day.

While the scoreline was decisive, Tilly described having to recover from problems with their spinnaker sets, crediting his crew again for resolving issues quickly and getting the boat moving again.

“We were quick all day,” he said.

The victory added a national title to Tilly’s recent Open Match Racing Regatta win at Geelong, with the team again finding success in RGYC’s RS21 fleet.

Tilly said his crew had always believed they could beat Crafoord and Hayhoe, who had attracted much of the attention heading into, and during, the championship.

“In our hearts we always thought we had it in us to take it out, and we went out there today and proved it,” he said.

“We had a big meeting last night and early this morning, and we really sat down and thought about how much we wanted it.

“Today was definitely about grit and determination.”

Crafoord reached the final with a 2-0 semi-final win over Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club’s Angus Cameron, which followed 16 wins from 18 round-robin races.

He remained pleased with his team’s regatta despite the final result.

“Still happy with everything. Just got to keep on working hard and training,” Crafoord said.

Hayhoe secured third place with a 2-0 win over Cameron in the petit final. Cameron finished fourth after his five-win Saturday earned the Western Australian team a semi-final place.

No additional racing was held to decide fifth to seventh, with organisers moving straight into the knockout program. Mornington Yacht Club’s Digby Taylor finished fifth, followed by Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Massimo Henderson in sixth, and Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia’s Fraser Baker in seventh.

RGYC Commodore Phil Francis said the championship had demonstrated the value of the club’s investment in its RS21 fleet and its ability to host national competition.

“When we bought the RS21s there was a lot of debate about whether spending that amount of money on a fleet of one-design boats was going to be worthwhile,” Francis said.

“I think we’ve proven that it is worthwhile with some amazingly competitive racing.”

Francis said the club’s Victorian Sailing Centre provided further opportunities to attract national regattas, while events such as the youth match racing championship helped encourage ongoing participation.

For Tilly, the venue also made an impression.

“We love this boat, we love the place,” he said.

“This regatta’s been so incredible, and we’ve just had such a great time that we’re really keen to come back.”

The 2026 Australian Youth Match Racing Championship was presented by DYSC Marine Supplies, with support from Garner Marine Services and Bull Sails, and hosted by Royal Geelong Yacht Club in conjunction with Australian Sailing.

Finn Class NSW Championship – Day 2 – Nossiter recaptures NSW Finn crown

Nossiter recaptures NSW Finn crown

Anthony Nossiter has regained the Finn NSW Championship crown he has previously won six times, including last year, this time sailing on tricky Pittwater, but it was by just one point to club mate Ian McKillop.

Nossiter (NSW) started the day on the backfoot. He was fifth overall coming into Day 2, so had a lot of ground to make up. And he did, winning Races 4 and 5 and finishing fifth in the final Race 6. Being a one-drop series once six races were completed, the triple Olympian was able to let go of a ninth place from yesterday.

Representing Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC), host of the Championship, Nossiter, had close calls today, so tight were the finishes.

“I had an early night last night so I could back and smash the younger blokes,” said Nossiter, laughing.

On his performance, Nossiter shared, “Sailing the boat through the water should be automatic for me, but I was a bit rusty… I was fortunate to win.”

Conditions on Pittwater were light and shifty, mainly out of the north-west, so it was hard going for all.

“And there was no wind at top in Race 3, so we all got stuck together. It was good they restarted it. The Race Committee did a good job.”

Nossiter is disappointed he can’t make the Finn Australians, as he had already committed to driving the rescue/chase boat at SailGP in Perth. Before that, he will use his strength and sailing knowledge on the super maxi LOYAL, in the upcoming Rolex Sydney Hobart.

McKillop came into the day three points and one place behind Nossiter. However, 4-2 placings and winning the final race, then dropping 11th from the opening race yesterday, meant McKillop, leap-frogged up into second place.

“The first two races were tricky today. It’s always tough sailing at Pittwater in a nor’ wester,” McKillop said. “And the top five, you can throw a blanket over who will win,” said McKillop, a four-time winner of the NSW title.

The RPAYC sailor said he was “super happy” moving up the leaderboard today, “though I was disappointed with yesterday’s race. I went around a wrong mark – that cost me. It was my own fault and I can’t change it, but I kept chipping away today.”

Like Nossiter, McKillop’s next sailing gig is the Sydney Hobart. He will race on the nippy 40 footer, Back 2 Black.

Yesterday’s leader, Lewis Davies, had to be content with third overall. The Victorian sailor’s 6-4-6 results of the day were in stark contrast to trio of top three results on Day 1. He might not see it this way, but he’s new to the class compared to others – and less experienced. Others in the class think he’s on the way to the top.

Looking at the younger men in the class, McKillop is impressed with 35-year-old Davies: “Lewy has only been in the boat four years and he’s been getting better and better. He’s taken it up another level again since February and he’s spending a lot of time in the boat, which is good to see.”

Sam Ede (Vic) finished seventh overall, with a best place of third in the opening race and wins the Under 30 title, as he makes impressive strides in the class. Ede also had pleasure of beating his father, Tim, who claimed 11th place overall.

Race 4 was a battle royale between Nossiter and Marcus Whitley (NSW), the latter missing the gun by 17 seconds. Richie Robertson (Vic) was a further 14 seconds behind.

Race 5 and Nossiter had a tight battle to the end with Ian McKillop, who lost out by a mere one second, with Matt Visser (NSW) one second behind McKillop. It doesn’t get closer.

Race 6 went McKillop’s way. He beat Matt Visser (NSW) over the line by 36 seconds. Whitley followed six seconds behind. Whitley is another up-and-coming Finn sailor and finished fourth overall.

Three further windward/leeward races, adding to the three sailed yesterday finalised the Championship Today’s racing was held in shifty and flukey north-westerly winds of 8-16 knots. You had to be on the ball and pick the shifts right to succeed today.

The third race was underway but had to be abandoned on the first leg at the top mark due to a complete change of wind. Race Officer, Elaine Fowler, was forced to set a new course to suit the north/north-easterly that came through Pittwater at a steady 16 knots.

The Finn NSW Championship was organised by RPAYC in conjunction with the NSW Finn Class Association. Nineteen boats represented NSW, Victoria and Queensland. Many are preparing for the upcoming Finn Australian Championship to be held off Eden in February.

Lewis Davies takes early lead in Finn NSW Championship

The sailor Chris Links pointed to as ‘one to watch’ has taken an early lead of the Finn NSW Championship, which started on Pittwater today, in ideal 10-14 knot north-easterly winds.

Three races were put to bed and Lewis Davies, from Victoria, scored a pair of second places and a third to amass a three point lead over local sailor, Links. A further four points away is Sam Ede, Davies’ club mate at Daveys Bay Yacht Club. Ede is the only one sailing in the Under 30s category at this event.

Lewis, who only started sailing a Finn in 2022 said, “I had a consistent day. I wasn’t far behind Nocka (defending champion and race winner, Anthony Nossiter) in the first race. And in the second, I wasn’t far behind Ian (McKillop).”

The first two races were quite consistent, with the wind fairly stable and the left side of the course favoured. However, “Race 3 was quite light and very shifty. I was going mad trying to find the wind downwind,” Davies said.

Thirty-five year old Davies is one of the youngest sailors in the fleet. He hasn’t looked at the pointscore. “I don’t want to know the points difference, but it’s good to have the lead,” he said.

“I’m feeling good in the boat. I didn’t make any real mistakes today. The focus of this regatta for me is consistency and less risk taking. I had good downwind speed and I used it to my advantage.”

As to the competition, the Victorian stated: “Everybody is competition. Everyone is dangerous. Everyone is there. In the last race, I thought I could easily have had a crack, but then I could have finished anywhere from first to 10th – so I didn’t do it.”

Some didn’t sail the correct courses today, so dropped down the leaderboard or did not finish, when a couple were ripe for a top three finish. Unlikely that mistake will be repeated. That being said, it will tighten the competition tomorrow.

Race 1 was a longer three lapper which suited triple Olympian and defending NSW champion, Nossiter to a tee. Davies and Ede picked up second and third places in that race. There were just 15 seconds separating the top two, with a further 35 seconds to Ede.

Davies also scored second in Race 2, which was won by McKillop (NSW), by just seven seconds. Marcus Whitley (NSW) was third, finishing only 10 seconds behind Davies in this hotly contested Championship. Links was fourth.

In Race 3, Matt Visser (NSW), had the goods, scoring a 22 second win over Links, with Davies third, little more than a minute adrift of Links.

Nossiter could not maintain the momentum of Race 1 and fell away to fifth on the two-lap course in Race 2 and dropped to ninth in Race 3: “I was learning how to sail again,” he said. ”I haven’t done much Finn sailing since the Finn Masters Worlds (in February), but it’s good to be out there again.”

Nossiter said there were “plenty of opportunities, as it was quite shifty in Race 3 on a nice day of sailing, but I would like a bit more breeze tomorrow please.” Others also would like a heavier day to mix things up a bit.

Hosted by Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) on Pittwater, Day 1 of the Finn NSW Championship, kicked off in fine style with three windward/leeward races put to bed in ideal conditions on a beautiful spring day. In all, the day gave competitors a good workout ahead of tomorrow’s final three races to decide the Championship.

Many of these sailors are gearing up for the 2027 Finn Australian Championship to be held in February at Twofold Bay Yacht Club in Eden on the NSW South Coast.

The Finn NSW Championship is organised by RPAYC in conjunction with the NSW Finn Class Association and supported by Vaikobi and North Sails. Nineteen boats representing NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
