Invictus Games Sailing - A huge Success

It was GAME ON DOWN UNDER

 

The Invictus Games is more than a sporting event – it captures hearts, challenges perceptions and changes lives. On Sunday many RPAYC Members, Staff & Volunteers joined us on Sydney Harbour to support and celebrate the unconquerable spirit of our wounded warriors.
Sailing was lucky to be one of 13 medal sports over the scheduled eight days of fierce but friendly competition across Greater Sydney including Sydney Olympic Park and Sydney Harbour.
RPAYC in conjunction with the CYCA and with assistance from the RSYS and RANSA organised the sailing competition which was held in Farm Cove on Sunday 21 October.
We are pleased to report that TEAM AUS and RPAYC Members: Squadron Leader Rob Saunders, Paul Langley, Craig McGrath and Marcus Wilson dominated their heat, and then went on to win the Medal Race in the Elliott 7 sailing event taking out the first gold medal for Australia.
 
Meanwhile fellow AUS sailors Davin Bretherton won silver and Peter Arbuckle won bronze in the Hansa Dinghy class.
Thousands of fans, including the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, witnessed history being made at the inaugural Invictus Games Sydney 2018 presented by Jaguar Land Rover sailing competition with the stunning Sydney Harbour as the backdrop.
 

Onlooking spectators admired amazing acts of comradery, sportsmanship and strong competition with plenty of emotion. Congratulations to all the competitors and well done to Invictus Sailing Sports Competition Manager (& RPAYC Head Coach) Tom Spithill for all of his efforts and thank you to our incredible Team of Volunteers, Members & Staff that supported this initiative including Alfreds Cruising who kindly took their boats down to the harbour and hosted members onboard.  Also thankyou to both the CYCA & RSYS who provided many resources and personnel to support the inclusion of sailing at the Invictus Games.

About RPAYC

The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club - RPAYC is a yacht racing and sailing club based on Pittwater.

The yacht club offers year round inshore and offshore racing, cruising, centreboard dinghy racing, sail training and courses plus has a large marina accommodating up to 352 vessels.

There is also a modern boatyard with comprehensive marine services to help maintain your vessel.

Membership, including family membership is now available.
