Speakers Corner's 'Gem's of the RPA Social Calendar'

On Friday 10th October, we were once again privileged to welcome an impressive speaker to the club for Speakers’ Corner.

On this occasion, it was Don McIntyre who gave an enthusiastic and entertaining review of his adventurous life to date.
From a description of his year spent unsupported in Antarctica, to why he recommends flying only German built gyrocopters if you are planning a pan Australia flying trip, to a graphic description of his epic rerun of Blyth’s voyage in an open boat, having been cast adrift from HMS BOUNTY, the experiences just tumbled on.

Southern apples & oranges for Club Marine Pittwater to Coffs Yacht Race

Two Victorian first time entrants for the Club Marine Pittwater to Coffs Yacht Race starting January 2, 2015 are set to join the local fleet for the annual navigator’s challenge up the eastern seaboard from Sydney to the NSW Mid North coast. Credit - Steb Fisher Photography - www.steb.com.auCredit - Steb Fisher Photography - www.steb.com.au

Virgin entrants Rob Hanna’s TP52 Shogun V and Jeff Dusting’s Sydney 47CR Adventure Safety Jem line up just five feet apart in length, but they are apples and oranges in terms of comfort and boat speed, though both have tasted handicap success.
At the lower end of the comfort spectrum is the all-out racer Shogun; lightweight and minimalist with its eight pipe cots for beds, stove, flushing bowl that looks something like a toilet and navigation table befitting a contortionist. During offshore campaigns it’s home, without the luxuries, to the race crew. Constantly moving about and groaning under the enormous loads.

TP52s can reach speeds of 32 knots or close to 60 km/h off the breeze.

Crawford Brothers taken on the 470 Class ISAF World Championship, Spain

We have just returned from our third and final trip to Europe for 2014. This trip was to compete in the 2014 ISAF World Championships in Santander, Spain. The ISAF World Championships are held every four years and is an event where all the Olympic classes hold their world championships at the same time at the same venue. It is the first event that sailors can qualify their nation for the upcoming Olympics.

Going into the worlds we felt comfortable, as we had already been to the venue during our last trip in May to do a coach’s regatta, so there were no surprises when we arrived. We arrived a week before the event started, funnily enough most of the European based teams were heading home to have a break before the event started as many had arrived weeks before to do training. We had a couple of days training by ourselves and then did another coach’s regatta with all the teams still at the venue, which was another good opportunity to have some races in the race areas for the worlds. We then had two days of measurement.

Alcohol - "Go Easy on the Drink"

Competitors are advised that the NSW Water Police will be conducting random breath testing of skippers and crew this season (sail boats and motor vessels).

Don't go overboard with alcohol. The blood alcohol limit on the water is the same as on the roads - 0.05% ... but be careful. The wind, waves and the sun combine to multiply the effects of alcohol. Your chances of disorientation and drowning are increased.

This goes for everyone - the skipper, the passengers and the crew. Be aware, random breath testing applies to the operator of a boat in NSW.

Dark Star’s triumph at MC38 Spring Regatta

New Australian champion Leslie Green and his Ginger crew may have fired off the first two bullets at the MC38 Spring Regatta at Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron over the three days of the long weekend, but it was payback time, and John Bacon’s Dark Star crew responded with two wins of their own and kept the pressure on to claim the winning trophy.
