Milly Bennett's University Of Sydney team crowned 2013 Australian University Yacht Racing Champions

Yesterday saw the conclusion of the 2013 Australian Universities Yacht Racing Championships. Very close racing and fluky conditions kept the team's racing hard over the two-day regatta.

Day 1: University Yacht Racing Nationals - Fierce battles and close racing between top four teams.

Day One was very light wind affair. The wind initially started blowing from the west and then swung from the North East after race one. The fleet spent an hour under postponement. The race committee had done a fantastic job getting in all 3 races yesterday.

Inaugural Australian Universities Yacht Racing Championships start today

The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club based in Newport is all set to host Australia’s first Universities fleet racing Nationals. Teams will not only be battling it out for the 2013 Australian title but also win the right to represent Australia at the Student Yachting World Cup in Pornic, France later this year.

Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club of Australia Wins the 47th Gov Cup

The final races were close, with Chris Steele of Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron winning the first race. Sam Gilmour and his team from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club came back strong, winning the next three races and so first place.

The day started with heavy overcast and very light winds. The course was set up north of the Newport Pier with observers on shore and on the pier. After one round of six races, the committee chose to wait for wind. The racers enjoyed their lunches while waiting.

Etchells 40th Anniversary

The Etchells class has now enjoyed 40 very strong years in Australia.

To celebrate, the International Etchells Class of Australia is hosting an anniversary celebration on Sunday 4 August 2013 at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and you are invited.

Two Teams Tie for first on Day Two of the Gov Cup

Day two brought south west winds of 8 to 13 knots at noon with a temperature in the low 70’s. There was heavy chop when the racers were towed out at noon. This was the day when the three teams with no losses had to race against each other.

Day One of Racing at 47th Governor’s Cup

Three teams are unbeaten at the end of the first day of racing. Each has yet to compete against any of the other two in the first round robin. There are four more rounds to be held tomorrow before moving on to the quarter finals.

Great Weather for the 47th Governor’s Cup

Practice day for the Gov Cup teams brought 8 to10 knots of wind, low 70’s temperature and a casual afternoon. All the teams checked in, got to renew friendships and make new ones. Many of the racers had been here before and/or competed against each other in a variety of events throughout the world. Some of the parents have arrived as well, including John Eastman and Richard Novak from Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club.
