Milly Bennett's University Of Sydney team crowned 2013 Australian University Yacht Racing Champions

Yesterday saw the conclusion of the 2013 Australian Universities Yacht Racing Championships. Very close racing and fluky conditions kept the team's racing hard over the two-day regatta.

Day 1: University Yacht Racing Nationals - Fierce battles and close racing between top four teams.

Day One was very light wind affair. The wind initially started blowing from the west and then swung from the North East after race one. The fleet spent an hour under postponement. The race committee had done a fantastic job getting in all 3 races yesterday.

The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club based in Newport is all set to host Australia’s first Universities fleet racing Nationals. Teams will not only be battling it out for the 2013 Australian title but also win the right to represent Australia at the Student Yachting World Cup in Pornic, France later this year.

Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club of Australia Wins the 47th Gov Cup

The final races were close, with Chris Steele of Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron winning the first race. Sam Gilmour and his team from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club came back strong, winning the next three races and so first place.

The day started with heavy overcast and very light winds. The course was set up north of the Newport Pier with observers on shore and on the pier. After one round of six races, the committee chose to wait for wind. The racers enjoyed their lunches while waiting.
